Dear customers during the festive period we are open as usual from 5:30pm, so please come celebrate with us during the festive time and make a special date on Christmas Eve Monday 24th December for a wonderful cosy Italian evening with us at Valentino's.

We are closed from Christmas day 25th December and we reopen in the New year on Wednesday 9th January.  Buone feste!!!

Easter walks: Ripon and Fountains Abbey, N Yorks Christopher Somerville

This walk will require some effort because it is more than six miles.

Make time to look round glorious Ripon Minster with its cheeky medieval misericord carvings, and linger in the Market Place, where the splendidly uniformed Wakeman blows his ceremonial horn each night at 9. Buy one of Appleton’s pork pies; then march out of town by way of Borrage Lane, where Wilfred Owen lodged in 1918 and wrote some of his finest war poems. The River Skell takes you south along banks of primroses, and on through the landscaped woods and parklands of Studley Royal, past Neo-Classical temples and grottoes, to the magnificent ruins of Fountains Abbey. Return along the Deer Park drive, looking out for the herd of fallow deer, and follow the field paths back towards the landmark Minster tower.

Start Ripon Minster, Ripon HG4 1QT (OS ref SE 314711).

Walk 9 miles (6 ½ short cut), 4 hours (3 hour short cut), OS Explorer 298.

Lunch Tea rooms, Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey (01765 602284; www.fountainsabbey.org.uk) Highlights Ripon Minster; Market Place; 24 Borrage Lane (where poet Wilfred Owen lodged); Studley Royal Park; Fountains Abbey.

Route Ripon Minster — Market Place — High Skellgate, Low Skellgate, Borrage Lane — left bank of River Skell to Hell Wath Cottage. Whitcliffe Hall — Chinese Wood — The Lake (short cut north to join Deer Park drive). Studley Royal Park (Temple of Fame) to Fountains Abbey. Visitor Centre — obelisk — Deer Park drive — Studley Roger— Rose Bridge — Hell Wath Cottage — retrace steps.
